Headaches are one of the more prevalent conditions that the world population is faced with. An article in the Washington Post stated that more than 50% of people worldwide have headache disorders. Although there are many causes for headaches, there can be some reasonable approaches that can be taken to manage this common ailment.
Dehydration, food sensitivities, trauma, and allergies are some of the common causes for headaches. Another prevalent type of headache is what we refer to as a "cervico-genic" headache. This means that the cause of the headache originates in the neck, or "cervical spine".
A primary reason why this type of headache is so prevalent is due to the habitual use of computers and cell phones. The natural tendency is for the individual to move their head forward and down as to better read the screen and/or keyboard. This variation in a person's posture increases the physical forces upon the neck while it works to support the weight of the head while the head has moves from it's normal anatomical position in relationship to the neck.
The result of this stress can be profound. The muscles from the base of the skull down to the neck and upper back have to work much harder to maintain this new position. That muscle tension can refer pain to the back, top, and side of the skull. That same muscle tension can also put direst pressure on two of the primary nerves that go from the neck to the back and top of the head, known as the greater and lesser occipital nerves. This condition can also influence the blood flow to the brain as well. In addition, this same misalignment of the neck can reduce the normal flow of cerebral-spinal fluid up into the brain, compromising the brain's daily function and recovery process.
A proper chiropractic analysis can identify this condition and move forward to actually correcting it. This can be done by gentle "adjustments" to the spine to restore the normal position and movement of the spine. Postural exercises as well as ergonomic strategies are implemented with long term benefits.
The examination, along with specific x-rays, will often shed a light to the patient that they've never seen before, allowing a greater understanding as to what caused their condition and realizing that there is a safe and effective resolve to their long time suffering.
